You may or not know this, but each year SunHouse and La Jolla Presbyterian Church participate in the La Jolla Christmas and Holiday parade.
This started out many years ago when the SunHouse owned a 1976 Cadillac. We decided one year to drive the Cadillac, 8-track player, red leather interior, flames painted on the front and all, down Girard. We entered as a miscellaneous vehicle and were right behind the car with the UFO attached to it's roof. I can still smell the exhaust from all those cars.
Well we have come a long way! Now we have high school students dress up as a living nativity, a pregnant Mary (the parade route is supposed to be the journey to Bethlehem), Joseph, wise people, shepherds, angels and of course our 2 favorites, Clyde and Jamal, the camels. The Middle School students wear bright red shirts and pass out candy canes with a simple message on each one. "Want more Christmas?" The idea is to have everyone at the parade come to an after party at the church with tons of sugar cookies, frosting, and lots of sprinkles, hot cocoa and fun music. There is also the opportunity to pet and take pictures with the camels and to pet sheep and sometimes donkeys!
If you are interested in helping out this year, we would love to have you help out! Here is what you should know. Everyone meets at the SunHouse at 12pm and high school students go over to wardrobe to get ready, middle schoolers get red shirts on and load up candy canes. Adults have it pretty easy and help set up tables, table clothes, and prepare the cookies for the masses.
Even if you are unable to help, be sure to at least show up and eat some delicious homemade cookies with a mountain of frosting. And of course be sure to look for the car with the UFO strapped to the top and who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of the old SunHouse Cady driving around too.
